Find solution to the shutdown

U.S. Rep. David McKinley of West Virginia in Congress, is absolutely right: “Enough is enough” in regard to the so-called “government shutdown.”

Some agencies of government have been idled, or nearly so, since Dec. 22. That is a record for a standoff between the executive and legislative branches of government.

As McKinley, R-W.Va., points out, the dispute is ridiculous. House of Representatives Majority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., has vowed that Democrats will not approve one dime to construct the barrier against illegal immigrants that President Donald Trump wants for our southern border.

But the $5.7 billion being sought is “just 10 percent of what was approved in the bipartisan Securing Fence Act of 2006 to help secure our border,” McKinley notes.

Pelosi herself, along with many other leaders of her party, has agreed in the past that border security — including a physical barrier — should be a priority. Why the change? Why is she now insisting that a wall or fence is, somehow, immoral and a waste of money?

Why? Politics. This has become a test of wills between Democrat leaders and Trump. And while the president has offered to compromise on various aspects of his proposal, Pelosi and company maintain a hard, take-no-prisoners stance.

Surely something can be worked out to end the shutdown and further secure our southern border. McKinley is correct in saying that, “Both Democrats and Republicans need to stop digging in their heels and work to find a solution…”
