Conyers issue not a done deal

Under fire for sexual harassment and an attempted coverup, U.S. Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., retired on Tuesday. No doubt the 88-year-old lawmaker hopes his action will make all the unpleasantness go away.

It should not. Getting Conyers out of the House is one step forward, but only that.

An investigation of what appears to be a years-long pattern of misbehavior should continue. Why? To learn how Conyers got away with it for so long — and to suggest reforms that could make abuse of power such as his less likely in the future.

Conyers used his power to intimidate women — and, despite complaints by some, no one did anything about him. He even used public money in an attempt to buy one woman’s silence.

A thorough investigation of Conyers is necessary both to expose his wrongdoing and learn what needs to be done to avoid similar abuses of power in the future.
