Target safety for school buses

School is back in session in our area, and that means law enforcement agencies should become attack dogs on behalf of the children.

Police and sheriff’s deputies should concentrate on speed limits in school zones and, at least until a no-tolerance message is sent, using additional personnel to write tickets for offenders.

Law enforcement should send the same message to those who refuse to obey laws regarding school buses. Too many drivers pass stopped buses, putting children at risk.

Making charges stick against motorists who pass stopped buses can be difficult. But, as we have noted, state legislators have made that less difficult. Police and sheriff’s deputies should take full advantage.

Obviously, the burden of keeping school zones and school buses safe falls on motorists. When we shirk that responsibility, law enforcement and judges should come down hard on offenders.
