Look into medical marijuana
When voters rejected a ballot measure to legalize marijuana in Ohio, it caused long faces among more than the pothead crowd. A substantial number of people had hoped Issue 3 would pass so they could gain legal access to medicine.
Public opinion polls indicate most Ohioans recognize the value of medicinal marijuana. It can be helpful to those suffering from several illnesses. Some cancer patients find it helps them get through chemotherapy, for example.
But rejection of Issue 3 threw the medicinal marijuana “baby” out with the recreational dope “bathwater.”
Reportedly, some state legislators have begun discussing action to legalize sale and possession of marijuana for medicinal purposes. Clearly, any such law would have to be thought out carefully, with safeguards against abuse. Some other states seem to have accomplished that.
No doubt advocates of recreational marijuana will be back with a new proposal. In the meantime, legislators are right to pursue discussion of how “pot” can be provided to sick and injured Ohioans who could benefit from it.
