A program worth expanding

One of the best ways to reduce the cost of a college education is to get some classes out of the way before ever setting foot on campus. Ohio is among many states with programs allowing high school and sometimes even middle school students to do that.

Thousands of Buckeye State students in grades 7-12 are taking advantage of the College Credit Plus program, according to a recent report. It allows them to earn college credit at no cost. The state reimburses participating institutions of higher learning at $40 per credit hour.

Both public schools and higher education face many challenges – and plenty of criticism. But this is something they are doing very, very right.

College Credit Plus already is doing an enormous amount of good. All involved should be looking into how they can expand the program to provide even more help for more students.
