Help save the coal industry

State governments simply cannot have the clout federal officials do in funding important research initiatives. Still, Ohio’s efforts to help the coal industry are important – in part because President Barack Obama’s administration has slashed “clean coal” research funding.

Ohio Rep. Jack Cera, D-Bellaire, reports the state has a total of $6,269,314 invested in seven coal research projects. Some of them are aimed at reducing emissions of pollutants such as carbon dioxide.

State funding is just part of the mix, of course. Private and federal money also is used in the projects. In addition, the state provides millions more for other coal research initiatives.

Millions of Ohioans rely on reasonably priced electricity generated from coal. State officials are right to do what they can to find ways to continue using that source of energy.
