David Lewis Smith

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — David Lewis Smith, 68, formerly of Columbiana County, died June 9 of natural causes.

David L. Smith, commonly known as “David L.”, was born on July 2, 1950, in Salineville, Ohio, to the union of Homer Smith and Naomi Close Smith. David graduated from Salineville High School in 1968 and received a Bachelors of Arts in Education from Young College in Florida. In 1979, David was hired onto the Columbiana County Sheriff’s Office, rising through the ranks to become detective and chief deputy before being elected Sheriff in January 2000. David L. remained at the Sheriff’s office until his retirement in 2008. During his tenure at the Sheriff’s office, David had the privilege to attend and graduate from the F.B.I. National Academy, earning his infamous yellow brick. David was honored to serve his community for 32 years and work among the best of his friends, whom he adored. Upon his retirement, David moved to St. Petersburg, Florida, where he enjoyed time with his family, the golf course and sunshine. He was an avid sports fan, following all Pittsburgh professional sports and the Ohio State Buckeyes.

He is survived by his three children; Travis (Claudia) Smith, Taylor Smith, and Morgan (Ron) Shasteen – Grandchildren; Patrick and Lucas Smith – Sister; Patty Higgins.

David L. lived life to the fullest and was fortunate enough to have a career that he loved. He enjoyed going to work everyday and spending his time with the people around him. He truly cared for his family and friends, David L. was one of the good ones and he will be sorely missed by all who had the pleasure to know him.
