AURORA — Francis James Smouse, 95, of South Chillicothe Road, died at 7:45 a.m. Friday, April 12, 2019 at the Ahuja Medical Center following a stroke.
Born Dec, 24, 1923, in Smiths Ferry, Pa., he was the son of the late Harry and Reba Smith Smouse.
He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Merchant Marines. He was a member of the United Church of Christ in Kent.
He was a teacher and coach at Hubbard Junior High and high schools in Coshocton East Liverpool and Ravenna and at Kent State. He also was a coach, scout and assistant player personnel director for the NFL Cincinnati Bengals.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Knowles Greene Smouse, four sisters and a brother.
Survivors include three children, F. Jeffrey (Cathy) Smouse of Sanford, N.C., M. Lynne (Hector Lopez) Smouse of Portland, Ore., and Barbara Anne (Douglas) Colucci of Stony Brook, N.Y.; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life service will be 11 a.m. June 17 at the Kent United Church of Christ with his daughter Lynne officiating.
