James Irey

SALEM — James Nelson Irey, 80, of Salem, died at 3:36 p.m. Sunday at the Salem Regional Medical Center. He was born Feb. 10, 1937 in Salem, the son of James I. and Dorothy (Hilliard) Irey.

A craftsman and woodworker. he built many homes in the Salem area, retiring in the 1970s. He owned and operated Irey 4th Street Carryout, and also bought and remodeled Irey’s Side Door. Later, while living in Texas, he worked as maintenance supervisor for 20 years for the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. He retired in 2000 and moved back to Salem. He was a member of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mary (McCoy) Irey; two sons, Steve Irey of Texas and Michael Irey of Florida; a daughter, Becky Irey of Salem; and two brothers, Bill Irey of Salem and Ron Irey of Salem.

No services or calling hours are planned. Private burial will be held at a later date at Grandview Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by the Stark Memorial Funeral Home.
