Southern adopts preschool student handbook

SALINEVILLE — As Southern Local takes more of an active role in providing preschool to its students, the Southern Local school board last week approved the preschool student handbook.

The handbook introduces parents to the expectations of the preschool and what is parents’ roles are going to be in helping their children be successful next school year. The half-day preschool will operate Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon and 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. The board hired Erin Newburn as the preschool teacher for the upcoming school year.

Additionally, the board approved some changes to the elementary and junior/senior handbooks for the upcoming school year. New requirements include changes in the definition of truancy as well as how excused and unexcused absences will be handled. Theses are new due to recently passed state legislation.

The board approved an internet acceptable use policy for the students and staff.

The agreement has been approved for the management agreement for the Shale Academy for next school year.

In other matters the board:

— Approved the physical therapy agreements with Kelly Crosby and Amy Purcell for the upcoming school year.

— Approved a long list of substitutes for the upcoming school year.

— Approved a contract with Daniel Spahn to provide attorney services through the Jefferson County Educational Service Center.

— The board approved continued coverage with SORSA through McBane Insurance Agency for the upcoming year. The coverage will include liability, cyber insurance and vehicle insurance for the school district.

— The board will have a special meeting at 9 a.m., June 29 to close out the finances at for the past school year and transfer money into the athletic fund for next school year. There will be no meeting of the board in July.

— The date for the Back To School Bash has been set from 5-7 p.m. Aug. 17. The event will be followed by the annual Meet the Team event.
