James Hale

CALCUTTA – James L. Hale, of Summit Drive, Calcutta, passed away Wednesday, December 2, 2015 at the East Liverpool City Hospital. He was 90.

Born in Vintondale, Pennsylvania, July 25, 1925, he was a son of the late Alfred and Hattie Barclay Hale. He was raised in Congo, West Virginia while his father pastored the Congo Church of the Nazarene and later moved to Wellsville and attended Wellsville High School until enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1942. A Signalman 3rd Class Petty Officer on a minesweeper, he served in the South Pacific during World War II. He was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Medal 1 star, Victor Medal and the Philippine Liberation Medal. He then trained with Commodores in Oceanside, California and Coronado, California. He also was a former member of the Civil Service. He was a member of the American Legion Post 736.

A member of the Construction & General Laborers Union Local 833 in New Brighton, he worked on many construction projects in this area for 50 years until retiring in 1987. During his retirement years he worked at both Beaver Creek Meadows and Turkana Golf Courses where he helped with construction and maintenance.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years Eula Rogers Hale at home. The couple married October 12, 1946. Together, they raised eight children: James W. Hale and his wife, Becky, of East Liverpool, Jean Grafton of East Liverpool, Barb Long and her husband, Jim, of Mullica Hill, New Jersey, Candy Travis and her husband, Paul, of Glenmoor, John Hale and his companion, Barb Litton, of East Liverpool, Jeff Hale and his wife, Michelle, of Joppa, Maryland, Steve Hale and his wife, Jill, of Powell, Ohio, and Don Hale and his wife, Amy, of Folsom, California.

There are 17 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 7 brothers and sisters.

Friends may visit Sunday at the Dawson Funeral Home where the family will be present from 5 to 8 p.m. Evangelist Will Montgomery will conduct a funeral service Monday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.

Burial will be at Spring Hill Cemetery in Wellsville where the Tri-State Veterans Burial Group will conduct military honors.

Following the service, friends and family will gather at the Dawson Family Center for fellowship.
