Walter Yates

SALEM – Walter Edward Yates, 99, of Salem, died Aug. 26.

He was born Nov. 5, 1914 in Damascus, Knox Township, the son of the late Norman C. and Mary Magdalene (Imobersteg) Yates.

Mr. Yates worked for 40 years at Electric Furnace, retiring in 1979 as chief draftsman, after which he moved to Crossville, Tenn., where he lived 23 years.

Survivors include two children, Edward Walter Yates of Crossville and Susanne Marie Earlabaugh of Huntington Beach, Calif.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Erla May Hall, and his siblings, Pearl Mildred Yates, Marcine Agnes Yates, Elizabeth E. “Betty” Kegelmyer and Jean C. Loesch.

A celebration of life service will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, at the Damascus Methodist Church with the Rev. Bob Amey officiating. Burial will be in Damascus Cemetery.
