Columbiana – Evelyn Mae Dodson, age 99, of Columbiana, died on Saturday, August 2, 2014 at Whispering Pines Village, Columbiana.
She was born on December 19, 1914 in Columbiana, a daughter of the late Leonard and Charlotte Heideger Stratton.
Evelyn was a lifetime area resident and a member of the First Christian Church of Columbiana. She worked as a welder for the US Navy during WWII, helping with the war effort and becoming a part of the women in America known as “Rosie The Riveter.” As a welder, Evelyn worked for Steel Door, Truscon Steel and worked at the Ravenna Arsenal. She retired from the F.C. Russell Co, Columbiana.
Evelyn enjoyed gardening, music, reading, puzzles and dancing and traveling with her late husband.
Her husband, David Dodson, whom she married on October 19, 1931, preceded her in death on December 14, 1992.
She is survived by four daughters, Mary Jane Burrell of New Springfield, Patricia Cope of Columbiana, Dawn (Paul) Rance of Columbiana and Shirley (Bill) Johns of Columbiana; a son, Carl Dodson of Columbiana; ten grandchildren, thirty two great grandchildren and fourteen great great grandchildren.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three sisters, Mildred Butler, Ruth McMurray and Jane Eicher; a brother, Harold Stratton; two son in-laws, Lester Burrell and Moris Lee Cope; a daughter in-law, Jane Rapp Dodson and three grandchildren.
A private family service will be held on Tuesday at the Warrick-Kummer-Rettig Funeral Home, Columbiana.
Burial will be at the Columbiana Cemetery.
