COLUMBIANA – Arlene Verna Swope, 90, of Columbiana, OH passed away peacefully Saturday, August 9, 2014 at Hospice House, Poland, with her loving family by her side.
Mrs. Swope was born October 25, 1923 in Canfield, OH, a daughter of Lauren L. and Lulu M. Paulin Moff. Upon graduation from Boardman High School, Arlene worked at Tech Dairy as a receptionist and bookkeeper where she met her husband James W. Swope. They were married on September 8, 1942. James passed away February 18, 1993.
During World War II, her husband James served in the US Army Medical Corps and they were stationed in Denver, CO. After World War II, James and Arlene returned to North Lima, OH and owned and operated the Frozen Food Center from 1948 until 1961. In 1961, they built Swope’s Valu King in North Lima which they owned and operated until they retired together and sold the business in 1984.
Arlene loved her family and enjoyed traveling with her husband to many countries during their retirement. She also enjoyed golfing and spending winters in Ft. Myers, FL. Arlene was an active, life-long member of the Paradise Church in Canfield, where she was a member of the Bible Study group.
Arlene will be greatly missed by her daughter Gayle L. Herron (Thomas); her grandchildren, Dr. Cynthia A. Sloan of Conroe, TX, Chad T. Herron (Shannon Culek) of Nederland, CO and Stacey R. Herron (David Epstein) of Brooklyn, NY; a great-grandchild Dashiell J. Herron-Epstein; brother Howard D. Moff (Barb), sisters-in-law Martha J. Graft, Ada Moff Miller (Alfred) and Marilyn J. Swope; nine nephews and three nieces.
Besides her parents and husband, Arlene was preceded in death by her brother Willis L. Moff.
Visitation will be at Seederly-Mong and Beck Funeral Home, 11500 Market Street, North Lima, on Monday, August 11 from 2pm to 4pm and 6pm to 8pm. Services will be held at Paradise Church, 10020 New Buffalo Road, Canfield, OH 44406 on Tuesday, August 12 at 11am with Pastor David Parry officiating. Viewing will begin one hour prior to the service at the church.
Interment will follow at Paradise Cemetery.
Memorial gifts may be made in Arlene’s memory to the church.
