MCALLEN, Texas – Evelyn V. Laney, 76, of Dale, Texas formerly of Salem, died after a brief illness at 2:45 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, with her family at her side, at McAllen Heart Hospital in McAllen, Texas.
She was born June 19, 1937 in Chester, West Virginia, the daughter of Howard and Mabel (Allison) Strum.
Prior to leaving the Salem area in 1982, she worked as a teller at the 1st National Bank in Salem, and retired in 1999 from the United Heritage Credit Union in Austin Texas.
Evelyn forever held her family as the most important thing in her life. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, Richard, and always looked forward to seeing her friends at the “Class of 56” reunions. On her trips back home, she loved to stop for the shows at Branson, MO., with Mickey Gilley being her favorite performer. Despite her recent lack of mobility due to several leg and knee surgeries, she utilized much of her time making lap robes as gifts for the residents of local nursing homes.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Raymond E. “Jack” Strum of Chester, WV.
Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Richard S. Laney of Dale, TX.; six children, Vicky Porter of Lisbon, Rick Laney of Dale, TX., Michelle Davenport of San Antonio, TX., Randy Laney of Dale TX., Sandy Guajardo of San Antonio, TX., and Melissa Garza of Lockhart, TX.; twelve grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; brothers Lester Strum of Lisbon, Bill Strum of St. Marys, WV., Joe (Debbie) Strum of Cambridge; sisters Marjorie Evans of Chester, WV., Eleanor (Bill) Wisor of Blairsville, PA., and Susie (Kevin) Hileman of Wellsburg, WV.
Following Evelyn’s wishes, no funeral services were conducted.
Arrangements for Evelyn were entrusted to the Rick Brown Funeral in McAllen, TX.
