Paula Cope

EAST PALESTINE – Paula Maria Cope, 69-years-old, died peacefully, Saturday, May 10, 2014, at UPMC Shadyside Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA after a brief illness. Paula had a strong love of family and faith in God. The love and prayers of family, friends, and many supporters carried her through her illness.

Paula was born on June 29, 1944 in Ballston Spa, NY to the late Paul D. and Philomena Derosa Mitchell. She graduated from Ballston Spa High School and after graduation worked at the NY State Offices as an Executive Secretary. She raised two wonderful sons in Ballston Spa, NY and enjoyed watching them play many sports and loved spending time with her family and friends.

Paula married James Cope in 1980 and moved to East Palestine, OH. Here Paula had many friends that she cared for deeply in the community and at the East Palestine Church of the Nazarene where she served as Head Stewart and Board member. She had worked 23 years at Heck’s Restaurant of Columbiana, retiring due to her illness in 2011.

Paula is survived by her husband of 33 years, James Cope; sons, Robert (Laura) Hart of Manasquan, NJ, and Steven (Joanna) Hart of Ballston Lake, NY; daughter Candice (Ronald) Desanzo of East Palestine, OH, step daughters Kristi (Timothy) Hofus of Anza, CA, and Nancy (Bill) Hostetter of Washingtonville, OH; her sisters, Rosalie (Robert) Burke of Saratoga Springs NY, Donna (Frederick) Maynard of Malta NY, Darlene (Michael) DeLancey of Saratoga Springs NY, and Gilda (Raymond) Gocal of St. Louis, MO.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the East Palestine Church of the Nazarene, 38 E. Rebecca St., East Palestine, Ohio 44413, on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at 11:00 a.m., with Pastor Pamela Price officiating. A light luncheon reception will follow at the Parsonage, 391 E. Grant St., East Palestine, OH.

In lieu of flowers or cards, memorial donations in her memory can be made to the East Palestine Church of the Nazarene at the above address, or UPMC Shadyside Hospital Foundation, 532 S. Aiken Ave. #302, Pittsburgh, PA 15232. Yet, beyond financial donations, Paula always lived by the word of God. Treat others the way you would like to be treated. i.e. Do a loving act of kindness, make someone laugh, send a card, give a hug, or say “I love you” to someone special in her memory.

The family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love, prayer, and support in many heart-felt forms from too many people to name individually, but including: the amazing oncology staff of the seventh floor at UPMC Shadyside and the members of the East Palestine Nazarene Church, family and friends. This tribute in Paula Cope’s memory sums up how fondly she will be remembered, her commemoration will be carried on in the legacy of love which is now in each of us and the lives she formed and touched by her love.
