Clarence Hays

Negley – Clarence R. “Bud” Hays, 94, of Negley, died at 7:50 pm Wednesday, May 21, 2014 at St. Mary’s Alzheimer’s Center.

Mr. Hays was born January 16, 1920 in Cannelton, PA, a son of Otto and Pearl McCowin Hays and had lived in this area all of his life.

Bud was a heavy equipment operator in the mining industry for many years working for the Union Mining Company. After his retirement, Bud worked for Middleton Township. He also was a poll worker for the Negley precinct and delivered Meals on Wheels for 18 years.

Bud served in the US Army during World War II. He is a member of Negley United Methodist Church, a life member of the Edward L. McGuckin Post #4579 VFW, the George F. McBane Post #31 American Legion, the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #467, East Palestine and the Middleton Township Fish and Game Club. He was also a member of the Beaver Coin Club and served as a volunteer fireman for the Negley Volunteer Fire Department for many years.

His wife, the former Ruth J. Huston, whom he married August 11, 1941 died June 5, 2006.

He is survived by four daughters, Barbara (Paul) Denny of Columbiana, Susan (Bob) Merry of Salem, Gayla (Larry) Zimmerman and Mary (Tom) Henry of East Palestine; two sons, Allen (Patti) Hays of Salem and Michael (Toni) Hays of East Palestine; fifteen grandchildren; 31 great grandchildren and one great great grandson.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Alice Martin.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, May 24, 2014 at the Van Dyke-Swaney-Rettig Funeral Home, East Palestine with Pastor Mark McTrustry and Minister Cindy Figley officiating. Burial will follow in Glenview Cemetery where military honors will be accorded by the East Palestine Group which Bud had been a member of for many years. Friends may call from 6-8 pm Friday and 10-11 am Saturday at the funeral home.
