SALEM – George Chekan Jr., age 90, passed away on April 15, 2014 in Salem, Ohio. He was born in Canton, Ohio on September 25, 1923 to George and Meri (Tolin) Chekan Sr. George was a Marine during the invasion of Iwo Jima during World War II, and is a Purple Heart recipient. He also was a Stark County Sheriff’s Deputy for a short time after working 37 years at Republic Steel. He loved his animals (dogs, cats, ect.) and nature as well. He frequently gave his handmade jewelry as gifts to his friends.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary (Green) Chekan; son, George Chekan III; brother, Albert Chekan; and sister, Margaret Garren. George is survived by two step-sons; brother, Ernest (Mary) Chekan; and nieces and nephews, Thomas Rhoads of Idaho, Meri Kovaleski and Karen Keir of Hanoverton, and Will (Heidi) Garren of Bergholz.
Friends may call on Friday, April 18, 2014 from 1-2 p.m. at Karlo-Libby Funeral Home. Military Honors will be at 2 p.m. at the funeral home in place of a funeral service. Burial will be in Sunset Hills Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in George’s name to: Alchemy Acres Animal Sanctuary, 1859 County Highway 410, Salem OH, 44460.
