LISBON – Alva Donald Moats Sr., 74, of Trinity Church Rd., passed away at 1:15pm, Monday, April 28, 2014 at the Salem Regional Medical Center following a recent illness.
Donald was born September 17, 1939 in Barbour County, West Virginia, a son of the late Harold Moats and the late Virginia (Morrison) Costlow, and had lived in the Lisbon area since 1961, coming from West Virginia.
Mr. Moats worked as a heavy equipment mechanic, retiring in 2005 from Trans-Spec in Columbiana, Ohio.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in Germany during peacetime. An avid outdoorsman, Donald was president of the World Tree Dog Association; member of the NRA; and the North American Fishing Club.
He is survived and will be dearly missed by his wife of 50 years, Lillie (May) Moats, whom he married October 26, 1963; daughters, Rebecca (Jack) Meighen of Canton, Ohio, Carla Moats of Lisbon, and Mary (Randy) Wilson of Lake Havasu, Arizona; sons, Mark (fiancee, Samantha Jones) Moats of Fort Knox, Kentucky, and Don Moats, Jr. of Lisbon; sister, Nancy Ours of Elkins, West Virginia; brothers, James Oran (Norma) Moats of Hanoverton and Isaac (the late Jenny) Moats of Coaltown, West Virginia; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11am, Friday, May 2, 2014 at the Eells-Leggett-Stauffer Funeral Home with Lay minister and brother-in-law, Fred May officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at Grove Hill Cemetery in Hanoverton.
The family will receive friends from 6pm to 8pm, Thursday at the funeral home.
