East Palestine, Ohio – Thelma E. VanFossan of East Palestine, passed away peacefully at age 101 on March 26, 2014. She was born in Canonsburg, PA, on June 19, 1912, the daughter of the late Ina & Alfred Griffith. Thelma lived the majority of her life in East Palestine, graduating from East Palestine High School. Following graduation, she worked at the W.S. George Pottery; then became Manager of the East Palestine Credit Bureau until retirement. She was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church in East Palestine & the Order of Eastern Star # 381.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Russell VanFossan, former Sheriff of Columbiana County, whom she married on June 14, 1935. She was also predeceased by a brother, Merv Griffith, and nephews Gary Griffith and John Eyster.
Thelma is survived by a brother, James Griffith, three nieces, Gail Watt, Gwenna Davidson (Donald), and Kate Taylor (Walter) and three nephews Timothy Griffith, Russell Lipp (Judy) and Herb Eyster. Also surviving are three great nieces, Susan Kuhar (Richard), Janeen Bentz (Jeffrey) and Katie Lipp, as well as one great nephew Jason Griffith, and four great great nieces and two great great nephews.
Thelma considered that her greatest gift and joy was the love and closeness of her family. She was an avid golfer and loved all aspects of nature. She will be remembered as a kind, loving, generous, and fun loving person, as well as a very special and treasured sister and aunt.
Calling hours will be Monday, March 31st, at the Oliver-Linsley Funeral Home at 644 East Main Street, from 12 Noon to 1:00 p.m., followed by the funeral service at the funeral home conducted by Rev. Mark McTrustry of her church.
