Columbiana – Louise G. Armstrong, 84, passed away at 10:00 pm Thursday, February 27, 2014 at her home in Whispering Pines Village.
Mrs. Armstrong was born December 22, 1929 in Medford, MA, a daughter of George and Eleanor Rice Still and had come to Columbiana in 1953 from Sandusky, OH.
Louise was a 1951 graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University where she was President of Gamma Phi Beta Sorority and was also elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
Louise was involved with her family in the Columbiana Ace Hardware and had also worked at the former New Waterford Bank retiring in 1991. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Columbiana where she was on the Board of Deacons and Trustees. She was a member of the Columbiana Women’s Club, the Philogy Club and Readers Guild, Columbiana Mother’s Club, Columbiana Rotary, Benjamin Firestone Post #290 American Legion Auxiliary and for 30 years was the Americanism Chairperson for Girl’s State. Louise was involved in the formation of the charter form of government for Columbiana and was on the Zoning Board of Appeals. Louise received the Lifetime of Service Award from the Columbiana Chamber of Commerce. She also volunteered at the Vista Center in Lisbon and was an avid bridge player.
She is survived by her three daughters, Carolyn L. LaLumia of Canfield, Charity E. (Frank Jr.) Barcelona of Saint Charles, IL and Beth A. (Paul) Bell of Leland, NC; her son, Walter S. Armstrong of Columbiana; and her five grandchildren, Cale, Nate, Leanna, Benjamin and Hunter.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Friday, March 7, 2014 at the First Presbyterian Church of Columbiana with Reverend Mark Wilds officiating.
Louise was blessed to be assisted by wonderful caregivers in the last year of her life. The Armstrong family thanks all of you for your loving hands and warm heart as you assisted our mother. We are especially grateful to the caregivers at Whispering Pines Village and Southern Care Hospice.
