Wadsworth – Karen Sue Swope, 71, of Wadsworth, passed away at 3:35pm, Saturday, December 21, 2013 at the Justin Rogers Hospice Care Center in Copley, Ohio, following a courageous nineteen month battle with pancreatic cancer. She had been a patient of the UH Seidman Cancer Center in Cleveland, Ohio throughout her illness.
Mrs. Swope was born in 1942 in Lisbon, Ohio, a daughter of the late Donald and Faye (Neal) Lewton. She was a 1960 graduate of Lisbon David Anderson High School, and had attended Bowling Green State University and Youngstown State University.
Karen had worked as the office manager of the Bacon-Cibula Medical Clinic in Lisbon and later as an inventory and production control clerk for Kaiser Refractories in Columbiana., a division of Kaiser Aluminum, and its successor National Refractories and Minerals Corp. She later served as a volunteer tutor in the Orrville City Schools GED program.
Mrs. Swope also served as a trustee on the board of the Wayne County Public Library System. Karen was also an active member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Wadsworth, Ohio. While a Presbyterian most of her life, she previously served as a Deacon at the Milton Presbyterian Church in Rittman, Ohio.
Karen enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, arts and crafts, gardening and biking. She was an avid golfer and loved to spend time with the ladies she golfed with.
She is survived and will be dearly missed by her husband, Philip S. Swope, with whom she celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on the 14th of December. She also leaves her daughter, Kirsten (Frederick) Caston of Downingtown, PA; two grandchildren, Nicole Caston and Christopher Caston, both of Downington; and her sister, Dr. Nancy (Gerald) Girard of San Antonio, Texas.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Craig Alan Swope in 1987.
Funeral services will be held at 11am, Tuesday, December 24, 2013 at the Eells-Leggett-Stauffer Funeral Home with the Rev. James L. Singleton officiating. Burial will follow at the Lisbon Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6pm to 8 pm, Monday at the Gillman Funeral Home, 360 West Sunset Drive, Rittman, Ohio and from 10am until the time of services Tuesday at the Eells-Leggett-Stauffer Funeral Home, Lisbon.
In lieu of other remembrances, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Craig Alan Swope Memorial Fund at the Wayne County Community Foundation, 517 North Market Street, Wooster, Ohio 44691.
