Salem Jon Glass Zeigler, age 77, of Salem, passed away at 11:50 p.m. Thursday, December 19, 2013 at his home. He was born January 3, 1936 in Salem, Ohio, the third child of the late Kenneth O. and Helen (Glass) Zeigler.
Jon was a lifelong resident of Salem. He began working in his father’s “Famous Market” bagging potatoes at the young age of 6. A 1953 graduate of Salem High School, Jon was the recipient of an Electric Furnace Scholarship to the University of Cincinnati Co-Op, graduating in 1958 with a degree in Engineering. Jon later received his MBA from the University of Pittsburgh.
He returned to Salem to work for the Electric Furnace Company for 35 years, retiring from EFCO as Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. Jon followed his best friend Jimmy Minamyer to Comstock in Pittsburgh and later returned to Salem to work for Butech.
For decades Jon enjoyed golf, bridge, tennis and skiing with his friends. Woodworking and yard work were also favorite pastimes. He loved to be busy. Jon was a quiet man who loved his family and friends dearly.
Jon was married to his first wife, Barbara Allen Zeigler for 25 years. They had a son, Jon Frederick Zeigler who resides in Maryland with his wife, Lynne and grandchildren, Weston Allen and Brianna Rae.
Jon and Vicki were married in 1987, merging the two families. Daughter Lorin Zeigler Pawlicki resides in Seattle, WA with her husband Jacek and grandchildren, Aleksander Jon and Avery Elizabeth.
Preceding him in death were his parents; beloved uncle, Frederick Glass; aunt, Ada Glass Zeigler; nephew, Brad Richard Zeigler; brother-in-law, Clint Lefler; and Jon F. Zeigler’s mother, Barbara Allen Zeigler.
Survivors include his loving wife, Vicki (DeJane) Zeigler; a son, Jon Frederick Zeigler; a daughter, Lorin Zeigler Pawlicki; a brother and best friend, Kenneth Zeigler Jr.; a sister, Sally Lefler; sister and brother-in-law, Richard and Karen Zeigler Fox; and many nieces and nephews.
A private gathering will be held at his home from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, January 3, 2014, which would have been Jon’s 78th birthday. Reflections of Jon’s life will be held at 5 p.m.
