East Palestine George H. Powell, 64, of McClure Road, passed away Friday morning at UPMC – Presbyterian, Pittsburgh, where he had been a patient for the past several days.
George was born March 18, 1949 in Kittanning, PA, a son of the late Perle and Nellie Chandler Powell, and had resided in the East Palestine area for the past nineteen years. He retired in 2010 as a Senior General Foreman for the Car Department with Norfolk & Southern Railroad, and its predecessors, Penn Central and Conrail. A U.S. Army veteran, he had served in the Vietnam War, and later with the Pennsylvania National Guard, where he had attended OCS, and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant.
He was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church, and was an avid Harley rider, and was an antique car enthusiast.
George is survived by his wife, the former Virginia Recupero, whom he married March 20, 1971; and two daughters, Meagen Powell of Harrisburg, PA and Tori Powell, Cleveland. He also leaves two grandchildren, Asia West and Rahquel Thomas, both of Harrisburg; three sisters, Diane Tack, Butler, PA, Mona Rupert, Kittanning, PA, and Phyllis Gattos, Cranberry Twp., PA; and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Oliver-Linsley Funeral Home, East Palestine, OH, with his pastor, Rev. Mark McTrustry, officiating. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Rimersburg, PA. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the time of service.
