Lyle Gwin

COLUMBIANA – Lyle Dale Gwin died Saturday evening, October 26, at his home.

Born December 28, 1930, in Mt. Jackson, PA., he was a son of C. Dale and Margaret Dice Gwin.

He was married March 4, 1952 to Jean Martsolf, who preceded him in death July 27, 1995. He is survived by two daughters of Columbiana; Brenda (Matt) Polen and Teresa (Terry) Shaffer. Lyle is also survived by grandchildren, Rob (Niki Chipps) Polen, Meredith Polen, and Kyle Shaffer of Columbiana, and Hannah Shaffer of Charlotte, NC. He also leaves one sister, Alice Rosile of Sharon, PA.

Besides his wife, Lyle was also preceded in death by an infant brother, James Gwin; a sister Altha Reed; a daughter, Cris Gwin; and granddaughter, Anne Polen.

Lyle was a 1949 graduate of North Beaver Township High School, and then worked for Sunnyside Mining Co., where he met his wife, Jean. He served overseas during the Korean War, and was a member of American Legion Post #290, Columbiana.

He moved to Columbiana in 1958 and was co-owner of G&K Mining in the early 1960’s. He went on to own and operate Gwin Contracting Co. for 38 years, an excavating business that also served the gas and oil industry. He donated equipment and service to many local service ventures, earning him the Columbiana Area Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Service Award in 1994.

A Mason and Shriner, he dedicated the best part of his life serving these institutions. His affiliations included: member of Allen Lodge 276 F. & A.M. in Columbiana; Honorary Life Member Argus Lodge 545 F. & A.M. in Canfield; Honorary Life Member of Ohio Order of DeMolay; Life Member of Al Koran Shrine Temple, Cleveland, OH; Member of Valley of Youngstown Scottish Rite; member and Past President of the Youngstown Shrine Club; Member of the Royal Order of Jesters, Court 14, Cleveland. Since 1976, he has served on the Board of Governors, and terms as Chairman of the Board of Shriners Hospital for Children, becoming Emeritus in 1996.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Columbiana.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 30, 2013 at Seederly-Mong and Beck Funeral Home, 154 S. Elm St. in Columbiana with Rev. Carolyn Griffeth officiating.

The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, October 29 at Seederly- Mong and Beck Funeral Home in Columbiana followed by a Masonic Service at 8:30 p.m.

Family will also receive friends an hour prior to the service, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 30, 2013.

Seederly-Mong and Beck Funeral Home in Columbiana was entrusted with the care of their loved one.
