Karl Kontnier

EAST LIVERPOOL – Well-known Liverpool Township Trustee and former Columbiana County Highway Department Superintendent Karl L. “Butch” Kontnier passed away at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 12, 2013 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh, following a brief illness. Butch, who resided on Lisbon Street in East Liverpool with his loving wife, Jerry, was 71.

Born on November 24, 1941 in East Liverpool, he was a son of the late Frank O. Kontnier and Marguerite Logan Kontnier Brown. Butch was graduated from East Liverpool High School in 1959 and remained in this area for the rest of his life, where he was a tireless worker and a devoted booster of his community and the people of the Tri-State area, especially those he served in Liverpool Township as trustee for the past 22 years.

Butch had worked at the former Crucible Steel before serving with the East Liverpool City Fire Department. He retired after 31 years with the Columbiana County Highway Department, where he had been Superintendent, in addition to his duties at the township.

An Ohio Township Association member, he also served on the Columbiana County Board of Health. In the little spare time he had, he enjoyed classic cars – especially his antique ones – and belonged to the Kustom Kemps of America classic car club. Butch was also a longtime NASCAR fan.

His wife, Jerry Hubbard Kontnier, whom he married on September 21, 1963, survives him at home. Also surviving are his daughters, of whom he was immensely proud: Kellie Rogers and her husband, Scott; Missy Smith and her husband, Scott; and Amy Trevor and her husband, Tom, all of East Liverpool.

Butch also leaves behind his four grandchildren, Lance Smith, Cassie Smith, Dylan Trevor and Abigail Trevor, along with his beloved dog, Mutlee.

In addition to his parents, Butch was preceded in death by his step-father, Clarence Brown, and by a step-brother, Robert Brown.

Friends may visit at the Dawson Funeral Home on Tuesday, where the family will be present from 3 to 8 p.m. A Liverpool Township Police and Fire Department walk-through recognition service will take place at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday.

Services will be held at the funeral home at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday with Pastor Larry Rose of Northside Community Church. Burial will be at Columbiana County Memorial Park.
