Salem – Joseph W. “Joe” Duriga, 71, of West Pine Lake Rd., passed away Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at the Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Virginia from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident while participating in the Rolling Thunder Veteran’s Tribute in Washington D.C.
Mr. Duriga was born January 9, 1942 in Salem, Ohio, a son of the late Charles Duriga and Esther (Graybeal) Duriga, and had lived in the Salem area all of his life.
He worked as a commercial truck driver for J.S. Paris Excavating of North Jackson and was also a Master Farrier for 35 years, and had shod many National Champion Arabian Horses over the years.
Mr. Duriga was a member of the U.S. Navy during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was stationed aboard the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk on its inaugural cruise.
Joe was a member of the American Legion; Mid Western Farrier’s Association; the American Farrier’s Association; and the Harley Owners Group (HOG). He loved to spend time with his grandchildren and will be dearly missed.
In addition to his mother of Damascus, he is survived and will be dearly remembered by his wife, Judy (Bentley) Lavalli-Duriga; daughters, Jodene (Michael) Wheeler of Orchard Park, NY; step-daughters, Kimberly (Al) Rehmann of Munith, MI and Megan (Bo) Neville of Lisbon; step-son, Russel (Renee’) Lavalli of Apple Valley, CA; sisters, Betty Filbin of Columbiana, Charlene (Jim) Akenhead of Marlboro, OH, and Carolyn Caldwell of Salem; grandchildren, Chanoa, Cody, Cassidy, Tess, Maddie, Jessica, and Desiree; several great grandchildren; cousin, Gary Wukotich and his family; nephew, Matt Akenhead; and many close friends.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
