Philip Cahill

SALEM – Philip Thomas Cahill, 85, of Canfield, Ohio, died Thursday, March 28, 2013. He was born Feb. 17, 1928 in Salem, Ohio, the son of the late James Henry Cahill and Margaret Hampton Cahill. He was a lifelong resident of the area.

He is survived by his wife, Lorine Roesti Cahill, who he married in 1951. Also surviving are two sons, Scott P. Cahill and wife Lisa of Salem and Eric D. Cahill and wife Diana of Troy, Ohio. He leaves a son-in-law, Tom Fitzgerald of South Wick, Mass. He also leaves a sister, Mona Boughton of Salem, seven grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Dr. Jerri Nielsen Fitzgerald, the South Pole physician who gained international recognition. Her book, “Icebound,” detailed her adventures. His sister, Nina Knag, also preceded him in death.

He was a builder in the Salem and Youngstown areas. He served in the United States Navy from 1946-1948 and was a member of the 1946 Salem High School alumni.
