New Waterford – Heaven became a much livelier place on Sunday, March 24, 2013, as it welcomed its newest resident, Michelle D. Pelino, of New Waterford, OH. Michelle passed away after a brief but spirited battle against cancer, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born June 15, 1961 in Sharon, Pennsylvania, a daughter of Richard and Darlene (Chiodo) Malandro. She graduated from Sharon High School in 1979, and from YSU with her bachelor’s degree in education. She received her master’s degree from Mary Grove College in Detroit, Michigan.
A talented art teacher for many years, first for the Youngstown City Schools and currently for the Crestview Local Schools, Michelle inspired her students to create and be unique individuals. Her students will always remember her passion for art (Andy Warhol, in particular) and her legendary field trips. She was fearless in her desire for her students to broaden their horizons by experiencing a wide variety of art and culture. Some of Michelle’s most memorable field trips included sleeping overnight at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh, seeing the works of Salvador Dali at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and viewing the Pablo Picasso exhibit at the Art Gallery of Ontario. She also took her students to New York City, Chicago and Cleveland where they were exposed to the works of many other famous artists, including Vincent Van Gogh and Georgia O’Keeffe.
Michelle had a passion for life and loved to travel with her husband, Frank, and their beloved sons, Nicholas and Dante. She was an avid Steeler fan.
Michelle was blessed with the ability to bring happiness and a smile to the faces of everyone she met. Her many loyal friends and co-workers will always remember her infectious smile, her positive attitude, and her kind, yet mischievous nature.
She and her family worshipped at Saint Charles Catholic Church. Michelle was also involved with several other special interest groups, including the National Education Association, the Ohio Education Association, and the Ohio Art Education Association.
Surviving are her husband, Frank A. Pelino, whom she married Aug. 20, 1994, and her sons Nicholas and Dante. Her sister, Sheila Biblis, resides in Hermitage, PA. Michelle was preceded in death by her parents.
