EAST LIVERPOOL – Carol Janet Hill Toot, a woman dedicated to her family, her church and her community, died early Friday morning after a struggle with a combination of health issues. She was 82.
Born Oct. 14, 1930, Carol was the daughter of Amanda (Mohr) and George D. Hill of East Palestine, Ohio. She graduated from East Palestine High School Class of 1948 and Kent State University in 1952. She taught in Scio, Ohio and later as a substitute teacher in East Liverpool.
Married to the love of her life, Rev. Dr. H. Gene Toot, she was proud to be a preacher’s wife for over 60 years, adoring the people of Trinity Presbyterian Church as family. At the church, she was a longtime member of the Canticle Choir, once serving as its director. An accomplished seamstress, she was chair of the costume committee of the Easter Pageant on the Hillside and did extensive research to be sure that the costumes were true to the Biblical period. She designed beautiful banners and led a group that created them for Trinity’s sanctuary. For many years she taught the Diakonia Sunday school class, was instrumental in organizing Christmas Decorating Parties and much, much more.
Outside of church, she was a member of the New Century Club, was the first woman appointed to the Beaver Creek Wild and Scenic Rivers Advisory Board, was on the Columbiana County Mental Health Association Board, worked as a volunteer for Reach To Recovery for American Cancer Society and was a member of the East Liverpool chapter of American Red Cross, where she worked on numerous blood drives.
She was the mother of Dr. G. David Toot (Kim) of Wellsville, N.Y., Janet Toot of East Liverpool, and Dr. Pamela Toot (Dave) Lanford of Silver Spring, Md. In addition to her children, her grandchildren gave her great joy. Abby (Scott ) Murray of Collingswood, N.J., Chris (Aileen) Fagan of Manassas, Va., Daniel Toot of Chicago, Ill. and Caroline Lanford of Silver Spring, Md. Great-grandchildren Colin Murray and Caris and Rory Fagan made her smile daily.
In addition to her parents Carol is preceded in death by her brother, George Alan “Beagle” Hill as well as many aunts and uncles.
Carol will be missed for her keen sense of humor, her love of music, her strong sense of right and wrong, her devotion to her family, her church and her God.
