FIRE CALLS

Salem — The fire department responded to the 300 block of West Eighth Street at 1:21 p.m. Friday where someone reported seeing smoke coming from a garage. It was found to be steam rising from the roof following a recent rain.

By 2 p.m. Tuesday, everything was business as usual at the Damascus Livestock Auction barns at 690 Valley Road. A small electrical fire caused the sale building with numerous people inside to be evacuated, according to Damascus Fire Chief Derrick Day. No injuries were reported and Day said the owners and workers had contained the fire when they arrived. Damage was minor. Firefighters received the call at 1:20 p.m. Tuesday is a sale day. Day said wires at a breaker switch became extremely hot causing moderate smoke inside the building and the breaker was shut off. ”We advised them to fix it before using it again,” he said.  Mutual aid was received from Winona, New Garden, Perry Township, Beloit and Salem which all responded and Day said they let the smoke ventilate naturally and “that took a little time.”
