An elderly Columbiana couple were taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown after their Honda CRV struck the back of a Waste Management truck on Fairfield School Road Monday afternoon not far from state Route 558. Highway patrol Trooper Mike Smith said Gilda Daugherty, 81, was driving the Honda southbound on Fairfield School Road at about 35 to 40 miles per hour when it struck the trash truck that was stopped to pick up trash in front of a home and was unoccupied at the time. Smith said the crash appears to have been caused by inattentive driving. Mrs. Daugherty was taken by Columbiana EMS to the hospital while the passenger, John Daugherty, exact age unknown, was taken to nearby Crestview Schools by New Waterford EMS for a medical helicopter to the same hospital. The Honda suffered heavy front end damage and was towed from the scene. The Columbiana Fire Department directed traffic and provided crash cleanup while the patrol investigated the crash, which occurred around 12:30 p.m. Both of the Daughertys were wearing their seat belts, Smith said. He also said that an assured clear distance citation is pending the completion of the investigation.
