Lisbon residence damaged by fire
LISBON — A Sunday afternoon fire of unknown origin caused major damage to a home at 37846 U.S. Route 30.
Fire officials had yet to determine who lived there, and the occupants were not home at the time but arrived as firefighters were combatting the blaze. According to the county auditor’s website, the home is owned by Jamie A. Swanson.
The property is located about a mile west of town, about halfway up Canton Hill on the north side of U.S. 30. A passing motorist called about 4:45 p.m. after seeing smoke.
Flames were reportedly shooting out of the rear of the two-story wood frame structure when the first firefighters arrived from Lisbon. Captain Richard Thomas was among the first group at the scene and he said it appeared the fire started in the kitchen area at the rear of the house and spread to the second floor.
Officials were still trying to determine the extent of the damage, but Thomas said the house sustained major fire and smoke damage.
Firefighters from the West Point and Hanover Township fire departments assisted. Lisbon Chief Paul Gresh Jr. said the entire back of the house was engulfed in flames when the first firefighters arrived, but they managed to get it under control fairly quickly.
“They did a heck of job knocking it down considering,” he said.
Traffic on U.S. 30 was blocked for more than an hour, and the Ohio Highway Patrol helped with traffic control.
