Lepper Library’s summer program blasts off today

LISBON — The Lepper Library is having its annual Summer Reading Program from June 3 to July 29.

The theme is “A Universe of Stories” in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. The program is for all ages and free to the public. Registration for children preK to grade 6 began June 3 but children can register any time during the summer.

The kickoff program, presented by Mr. Ralf from OH WOW! The Roger and Gloria Jones Children’s Center for Science & Technology, will be at 1 p.m. today. Participants will keep track of time spent reading (or being read to) by marking off space-themed symbols on a reading log provided at registration and at the weekly programs.

The weekly children’s programs will be 1 p.m. Mondays starting June 10. Guest presenters will be from Columbiana County libraries.

The Summer Reading Program finale will feature Dr. Dave’s Whiz Bang Science Show presentation “Moon Landing” at 1 p.m. Monday, July 29. The finale will also have a pizza party provided by Italo’s of Lisbon.

Prizes for reading during the summer will also be awarded at the finale, such as moon boots, two free passes to the Great Lakes Science Center, two free passes to COSI, a Hexbug Nano Space Discovery Station, an astronaut helmet and back pack, and more.

The library has been awarded grants from the Dollar General Foundation and Sheetz for the program to encourage early literacy.

Teens in grades 7-12 can also participate in the program by reading books, magazines, e-books, manga, zines, audiobooks, e-audiobooks, or even to someone else to win prizes and gift cards. There are two scheduled programs for teens: at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 27, there will be a movie on the new big screen and at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 18 there will be an out-of-this-world nacho party. The party will also have crafts to make and take.

Prizes that the teens can win are a $25 gift card to Apple/iTunes, $25 gift card to Gamestop, $25 gift card to Barnes and Noble, $25 gift card to Walmart, and a $25 gift card to Pizza Hut.

Adults can also join the Summer Reading Program by reading books, listening to audiobooks, or by coming to programs throughout June and July. For each book or audiobook read the participant will receive an entry to win one of the five prizes. The winners of the grand prizes for adults will be drawn July 29.

A newly released space themed documentary will be shown at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, June 20

The Adult Coloring Club will get to color the cosmos at 6 p.m. Monday, June 24.

The monthly Adult Craft Night in July will be 6 p.m. Monday, July 1 whn galaxy lights will be made, supplies are provided and registration is required.

On Thursday, July 11 the Mahoning Valley Astronomical Society with Jodi McCullough will give a presentation at 8:30 pm with a viewing of the first quarter moon following. The rain date will be July 12.

The library will also have a reshowing of a guided re-creation of the lunar landing at 5 p.m. Monday, July 15t through a live webcast event by the American Museum of Natural History for the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission.

At 1 p.m. Saturday, July 20, Reed Kimball, director of education at the MAPS Air Museum in North Canton, will give a presentation on the history of space flight.

At 5:30 p.m. Thursday, July 25, the Space Themed Movie Night will be about James T. Kirk, an academy rookie with more nerve than leadership.

And 1 p.m. Saturday, July 27 there will be a UFO presentation given by Fred Saluga, former police officer and MUFON State Director in West Virginia.
