Hancock BOE looks to have analysis done

NEW CUMBERLAND–Hancock County Board of Education discussed bringing in a graduate student from Marshall University to develop job classifications, descriptions and wage scales Monday evening.

“I think before we have somebody come in, I would like to see some demographics and data points that we want to make sure are included within that classification assessment,” said board president Michelle Chappell.

This student will be of no cost and will work independently for the school district. The student will also conduct a cost analysis for other counties to see how Hancock compares.

Councilman Tim Reinard proposed the idea. The board has done this in the past, but concluded it has been approximately 20 years. The last time a graduate student conducted this type of analysis the findings were on par with surrounding school districts.

The board did not vote on the item, but decided this is an administrative action and are leaving the decision to Dawn Petrovich the new superintendent. The board does plan to have suggestions for Petrovich by July 1, which is her first day as superintendent.

“Looking right now at some of the salaries, in comparison to Dawn’s there are people that are responsible for a lot less and are making a lot of money. I don’t want to hurt them financially,” said Reinard. “What I’m looking at is for Marshall University to send up one of their graduate students to conduct a job description, job classification and wage scale study to show people what they should make, so that if anybody sitting at this table retires, we have an idea as to what to pay.”

The board is unsure of how long the analysis will take if the decision to follow through is made, and are not sure at this time if they will follow the recommendations made in the analysis.
