Quaker Castings call

Morning Journal/Mary Ann Greier

Salem firefighters work on the roof at Quaker City Castings off of South Broadway and Euclid Street where Capt. Jeff Olinger said employees speculated that furnace embers caught the roof on fire Wednesday afternoon. The fire department was called to the scene at the foundry at 3:10 p.m., with flames showing on the roof. Olinger said employees were attempting to extinguish the fire with a garden hose and were evacuated from that part of the plant. The fire department knocked the fire down quickly and remained on scene for an hour. The official cause was listed as undetermined. No injuries were reported.
