Fire destroys vacant East Liverpool home
A weekend fire in a vacant home on the East End is a suspected arson, according to a Liverpool Township fire department spokesman.
Dave Ward confirmed Monday that crews from his department, Calcutta, East Liverpool and Glenmoor responded to a fully engulfed vacant house at 1524 Ruth St. shortly after midnight Saturday. He said that he believed the land bank was in the process of acquiring the property, which was owned by Robert A. and Ruth F. Ornitz’s trust and valued at $43,500, Columbiana County property records confirmed.
Upon arrival, he noticed that windows in the structure, which had been unoccupied for a while were broken out and appeared to be a “complete loss.” Ward said, “The home had no utilities, which is why arson is suspected, and there is not much left inside.
While Liverpool Township was at the call, Wellsville Fire Department stood by on Station 8, according to Ward. Crews cleared the scene after three hours.
The two-bedroom, one-bath home had been built in 1896 and remodeled in 1992.
The blaze is still under investigation≥
