Pa. woman pleads to assault on cops

LISBON — A New Brighton, Pa., woman who assaulted an East Palestine police officer in August pleaded guilty to four charges in Common Pleas Court on Wednesday morning.

Kayla R. Mennell, 22, pleaded guilty to assault, vandalism and two counts of harassment with a bodily substance.

Assistant County Prosecutor Tammie Riley Jones said at the time of sentencing she will request an 18-month prison term for Mennell, who has agreed to pay the village of East Palestine $1,019 toward the repairs of the police cruiser she damaged.

In addition to repeatedly kicking the cruiser, causing dents in the rear driver’s side door, Mennell kicked Patrolman Jacob Koehler. Then while she was being placed in the holding cell at the East Palestine police department, Mennell spit on both Koehler and Patrolman William Milliken while calling them “white pieces of (expletive).”

A pre-sentencing investigation was ordered including an evaluation for possible placement at the Eastern Ohio Correction Center. Mennell remains in custody at the county jail pending her sentencing hearing, which is scheduled for May 24.
