LEETONIA — The Leetonia Schools cafeteria staff has been recognized for its attention to students with special dietary needs.

The Nutrition Group presented the Moments Matter Award to the staff members last week during a special ceremony which company administrators from the corporate office in Irwin, Pa., attended. The staff members received the award for their efforts in caring for students with peanut allergies.

According to Alexis Plant, Leetonia food services supervisor, the award was for the cafeteria staff’s “continued positive and pleasant service to the students at the Leetonia K-12 Campus. Specifically, their attention to detail and going above and beyond for students with food allergies.”

The staff members were nominated for their actions regarding a couple students with a severe peanut allergy, Plant said. They are trained to ensure all staff members know how to handle the students’ food and what kinds of food they can have.

“The cooks at the Leetonia cafeteria go above and beyond for all of the students every day,” she said. “They are especially conscientious for students with allergies, so they have the same experience as the other students, while still making sure that they are safe.”

Schools Superintendent Rob Mehno praised the cafeteria staff for their taking the time to enrich the lives of the students.

“We are extremely proud of our cafeteria staff,” he said. “They take time each day to interact with our students in a positive manner including a friendly smile, conversation about their day and words of encouragement. They continue to go above and beyond to meet the needs of each student. “They are an amazing staff and this award is well deserved.”

Staff members received a cake, flowers and a monetary gift from a family as a thank you for taking extra care when it comes to allergy safety.

The Nutrition Group serves over 200 districts in five states. Leetonia is one of five districts recognized in this round of awards.
