Program will help students hone skills

SALINEVILLE — Southern Local students will be receiving more training in job skills such as computers after the school learned it will be the recipient of a Project Lead the Way grant.

Superintendent Tom Cunningham told the board of education last week he learned of the $15,000 grant through John Dilling at the Educational Service Center. The program will provide training for students in the areas of computer science and coding. Students will start learning the skills in the sixth grade.

Cunningham said he is expecting more information from Dilling shortly on the program.

In other programs designed to give Southern’s students more skills toward the future, there will be more STEM starting in the elementary school level. At the high school, a health program will include job shadowing, so students can learn more about careers in the health and medical fields. That way they can make more educated decisions about which jobs might be a good fit for them before the training begins.

In other matters before the board:

— The school has several students selected to display their art for the upcoming Columbiana County Art Show through the ESC, which is set from 6 to 8 p.m., Feb. 28 at the county Career and Technical Center.

— The board approved overtime for those working in the treasurer’s office — Treasurer Greg Sabbato, Julie Dowling and Debbie Lyle — as they begin changing from one software package to another, which is Windows based. Sabbato said for now they are doing the accounting in both programs to make certain everything is coming out the same. Once it does for two months, they will only use the new program and will no longer need more hours to get the work done.

— The board approved a memorandum of understanding for the College Credit Plus program with Eastern Gateway Community College.

— The board approved to pay Utica Shale Academy $4,349 for adjustments made to the fiscal year 2018 management fee. Sabbato noted the numbers are audited and were rounded down. The difference has to do with time in the classroom seat and time out of the seat involved in other parts of the program. Sabbato told the board adjustments have been made so next year there should not be a problem.

— The board approved coaches for some of the current and spring sports: Chris Ingledue, volunteer girls baseball coach; Kathy Randolph, girls track coach; James Malone, assistant girls track coach; Kyler Woodward, volunteer track assistant Kyler Woodward; Mike Skrinjar, head boys track coach; Kyle Exline, assistant boys track coach; Brenda Kekel, junior high boys track coach; Rich Sloan, junior high girls track coach; Brent Boyle softball head coach; Andrew Vulgamore, softball assistant coach; Marci Higgins, softball assistant coach; Jason Glover, baseball head coach; Gerald Grimm, assistant high school baseball coach; and Chris Lewis, assistant high school baseball coach.

— The next meeting of the board is set for 6:30 p.m., March 13.
