Students building on CTC education

LISBON — Chance Bricker, the construction tech instructor, and one of his senior students, Jacob Dean, gave the Columbiana County Career and Technical Center Board an overview of the program this week.

The two-year high school construction tech program starts with safety, first aid and power tools and then leads to students learning all aspects of construction, from reading designs to completion both inside and out. Additionally, Bricker said students learn skills to make them employable so they can gain apprenticeships and work on creating projects for the community, such as recent jobs building cabinets for the Beaver Creek Wildlife Center, building benches for the dugouts at Beaver Local schools and creating a Frisbee golf course for the Scenic Vista Park.

Students also get a chance to show off their skills by competing in regional competitions. They gain their industry credentials and leave with their OSHA cards.

Dean said he learns best by working with his hands and creating things, making this program great for him. Dean said he has also been doing work study, which has allowed him to do drywall, trim, door frames and other construction jobs. According to Dean, the longer classes allow him time to get to know his teachers well, and the teachers will work with them to strengthen the students’ weaknesses.

After graduation, Dean said he has signed up to join the Navy, reporting on June 22 when he plans to continue working in construction as a Seabee.

In other matters:

— The first class of registered nurses from the CCCTC are scheduled to graduate in about 10 weeks, with 29 of the 30 people accepted into the program making it through this point. There are already 33 Licensed Practical Nurses ready to begin the LPN to RN program when a new class begins in April.

— The board approved the hiring of Elizabeth Buzzard, Mark Hans and Marcella Hinzman, as adult education personnel.

— The board accepted donations of welding wire from Bird Equipment LLC and practice material from Appalachian Trailer.

— The board approved a contract for $6,000 through the Mahoning County Educational Service Center for services for students who qualify through the Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities. Adkins said this gives students with disabilities a person to work with in order to plan their move into employment.

— The board approved maintaining membership in the Ohio Association for Career/Technical Education, $4,000; the Ohio School Board Association, $2,817 and the Family and Children First Council through the Columbiana County ESC, $500.

— During a reorganization meeting held at the beginning of the night, the board swore in three returning board members and a new board member, Chuck Wellman of Crestview.
