Pulled over, drivers pass the OVI test

COLUMBIANA — City police found no one driving under the influence during the national Drive Sober of Get Pulled over safety campaign in recent weeks.

Columbiana police Chief Tim Gladis released the results of the local effort on the department’s Facebook page.

He said police made 99 traffic stops. Of those, 11 people were cited for suspended operator’s licenses, five were cited for speeding, and one person was cited for no child restraint.

There were no OVI offenses for those both over and under 21 years old.

Police issued 11 other citations and gave warnings to 71 people during the program which was held nationally between Aug. 14 through Sept. 3.

Gladis said local police logged 428 hours during the safety campaign.

“Thanks to our officers for focusing on traffic safety during this effort. They take traffic safety seriously and want everyone to get home to their loved ones without injury or death,” he said on Facebook.

He also said he was pleased that no drugged or drunk driving arrests were necessary, considering the amount of traffic coming through the city.

“Special thanks to all of you who are obeying our traffic laws,” he said.

Another National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Driver Sober campaign is planned for Dec. 13-31.

According to the NHTSA an average of 300 people died in drunk-driving crashes during the Christmas through New Year’s holiday period over the last five years.

More than 700 people lost their lives in drunk-driving crashes in December of 2016 alone.

The NHTSA has released a new advertisement called “No Big Deal” to illustrate the destruction caused by a drunk driver and its consequences. The ad is accompanied by a 360-degree virtual reality web experience of a drunk driving crash scene and can be found online at nhtsa.gov/crash.
