Homeless vets have another option available

EAST LIVERPOOL — The Columbiana Metropolitan Housing Authority (CMHA) was recently awarded five vouchers dedicated solely to providing safe, decent, affordable housing to military veterans.

The HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) program combines Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) rental assistance for homeless veterans with case management and clinical services provided by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The VA provides these services at VA medical centers and community-based outreach clinics.

Bernard Bennett, CMHA executive director, said he is excited about the opportunity to assist area veterans.

“This award of VASH vouchers is the culmination of many years of effort by many people. We are excited to be a part of a program that will help meet the housing needs of veterans throughout Columbiana County. We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to our veterans and assisting them with housing is one way of showing that gratitude,” he said.

Every year since 2008, HUD and VA have awarded HUD-VASH vouchers based on geographic need and public housing agency (PHA) administrative performance.
