Fountain vandals plead out, each must pay $1,154 in restitution

EAST LIVERPOOL — Two women will have to pay the city back for damage done to the fountain at Devon’s Diamond, which was found overflowing with suds Tuesday morning.

Appearing in East Liverpool Municipal Court Wednesday, Shenallia D. Gay, 44, Vernia Street, East Liverpool, and Amanda L. Anderson, 38, of Zanesville, both pleaded no contest to one count of criminal mischief for their roles in the vandalism of the fountains.

Gay and Anderson were accused of dumping a soap powder into the fountain, which caused foam bubbles to overflow out of the fountain and onto the ground.

Police were notified of the incident about 12:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Officials reported that after pouring six gallons of vinegar as an attempt to curb the suds, they decided to shut off the pump to the fountain out of concerns for damage. The pump had just been purchased this past spring courtesy of a donation made by the Liverpool Township Patrolman’s Association.

Surveillance video saw the women at the fountain, each putting their hands in the water, followed by the foaming action. After receiving several tips, police visited Gay at her residence and took her to the police station for questioning.

At the police station, Gay admitted being at the fountain but denied putting any soap in there, despite the video showing otherwise. Gay also declined to identify who the second woman was on the video.

After Gay was charged and released, Anderson also arrived at the station and turned herself into police, identifying herself as the second woman there at the time.

Both women were fined $150, and were each sentenced to two days in jail and three years probation. Both women will also be required to each pay $1,154 in restitution.
