Church will mix music with strawberries

COLUMBIANA — The second concert for the Under the Dome concert series will also kick off the First Presbyterian Church’s annual Strawberry Festival at 2 p.m. Sunday.

The free concert will feature The Swing Time Big Band, a Cleveland-based band that delivers authentic renditions of some of the jazz era’s greatest composers and band leaders like Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Tommy Dorsey, Stan Kenton, Glenn Miller and many more, according to a press release announcing the event.

As an ensemble, Swing Time has played at inaugural balls, the 2016 Republican National Convention and countless formal events throughout Ohio.

As individuals, the band’s 17 musicians have performed with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, Warren Convington, Buddy Rich, Louie Bellson, Jimmy Dorsey and The Cleveland Jazz Orchestra.

Vocalist Anna Givens, praised for a voice “fifty years behind its time” brings the old standards back to life with her “silky and emotive crooning,” the release stated.

Following the concert First Presbyterian will host its annual Strawberry Festival featuring free fresh, local strawberries and ice cream, courtesy of the church’s Presbyterian Women’s chapter.

The June 10 concert is the second of four concerts being presented by Under the Dome during 2018.

Subsequent concerts include authentic Appalachian Bluegrass by singer-songwriter Charles Wesley on Sept. 23 and a classical Christmas with the Stambaugh Chorus on Dec. 9.

Under the Dome Concerts are sponsored by First Presbyterian, Columbiana and the Columbiana Community Foundation.
