Free smoke detectors available

Residents of St. Clair Township who need a smoke detector can get one at no charge from the Calcutta Volunteer Fire Department, according to firefighter and department trustee Randy Schneider. The department has partnered with the Red Cross to make the devices available for those residents in need, and firefighters will come to the home and install them if needed. Schneider said the department has discovered through its response to various calls that “a lot of houses don’t have one,” and said, “We find this is one way to prevent fires and provide for our community. We’re partnering with the Red Cross to prevent the loss of life and property.” It is an on-going program, and those in need of a detector can stop at the station at 7 p.m. Monday nights or visit www.calcuttavfd.com to obtain a form to register for one. Once the form is returned, an appointment can be made to have the smoke detector installed if need be.
