United Local dealing with flu outbreak

HANOVERTON — The United school board Thursday discussed the current flu outbreak at the elementary school and the actions being taken to stem the spread of the illness.

Superintendent Lance Hostetler and elementary principal Tina Hughes updated the board on the situation which has seen over 150 students out of school and dozens of others sent home daily the past few days.

They said the maintenance department has been cleaning and sanitizing rooms and hallways and teachers and staff have been sanitizing classrooms and work stations several times each day. Students are also being made to wash their hands consistently.

Board member Beth Ann Sheen questioned if the department has a fogger to spray the air and if so why it is not being used.

Bill Thompson, a member of the department, said he believes there is a very old unit in the basement, but that he thinks it no longer works.

Sheen suggested the department consider renting one or borrowing one from an area district. High school principal Bill Young, however, noted that the fogger would have to be used on a daily basis due to the flu cycle.

Board president Mike Ellyson asked Hostetler to tell the department to continue with the extra cleanings and to see if the fogger works.

In other business, the board accepted the retirement effective June 1 of Richard Johnson as school psychologist. Hostetler said he is working with Leetonia Schools Superintendent Rob Mehno to share a psychologist beginning next year, with United serving as the primary fiscal agent. He said the psychologist would serve three days a week at United and two days a week at Leetonia.

Also under personnel, the board granted supplemental contracts for 2017-2018 to Danielle Burch for assistant varsity girls track, Luke Williams for junior high boys track, Chris Grace for junior high girls track, Mike Dempster for assistant junior high track, Megan Gozelanczky for assistant junior high track, Lucinda Neiswanger for play director 2 and Nicole Rummel for assistant play director; as well as a supplemental contract for 2018-2019 to David Ogilvie for head varsity football coach.

The next regular board meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. March 21 in the high school library.
