Journal worthy of six awards from AP
COLUMBUS — Members of the Morning Journal news and sports staffs have been named finalists for six awards in the Ohio Associated Press Media Editors’ 2017 newspaper contest.
Photographer Patti Schaeffer was nominated in the “Best Feature Photo” category for her photo, “Dinner.” Schaeffer was also nominated in the “Best Photographer” category.
Staff Writer Jo Ann Bobby Gilbert was nominated in the “Best Explanatory Reporting” category for her stories on the traffic cameras installed in East Liverpool.
Assistant Sports Editor Michael Burich was nominated in “Best Sports Enterprise,” for his story, “The Loss of Win.” The sports staff was also nominated for “Best Daily Sports Section.”
Editor Dorma J. Tolson was nominated in the “Best Editorial Writer” category.
The awards in actual order of finish — first, second and third places — will be announced at the Ohio APME annual awards banquet March 24 in Columbus.
Sixty-four daily newspapers submitted 1,922 entries in the contest, which featured news and sports stories, features, editorials, columns, graphics and photos from 2017.
Entries were judged by editors from the Niagara-Gazette, Niagara Falls, New York and the Cadillac (Michigan) News, Division II.
