Beaver Local approves funds for field repairs

CALCUTTA — Improvements to both the fencing at the baseball and softball fields and the roof of the athletic complex were approved this week by the Beaver Local Board of Education.

With a unanimous vote, the board approved quotes from Lee Cain Fence and Construction, which will handle construction on the baseball and softball fences. The fence at the baseball field will cost $17,011; the softball field fence, $7,852.

The plan for both fields will be to remove the six-foot and four-foot fences; install an eight-foot high fence in front of the dugout with the bottom rail; reinstall all six-foot fencing to include a bottom rail; reinstall the four-foot fencing with tension wire; and move the 10-foot gate.

The replacement of the fences is the latest resolution to problems that had occurred with the fields since initial complaints by several families last fall.

Teams have not been able to use the fields since the K-12 campus opened three years ago. Garbage, rocks and other debris from the outfield later were discovered beneath the sod, and school officials realized the fields were not prepared properly.

Fundraising efforts got underway soon after — spearheaded by Billy Pancake and Brian McKenzie, along with the board. Multiple businesses and residents donated either money, materials or time toward the new renovations.

Superintendent Eric Lowe said the school’s construction manager from the building project would be finishing up and will return contingency money from the project to the district at a future date.

“As a part of that, they have also recognized that we have continued to work on those fields, and they are also going to turn around $17,000 from a previous job they had done out on those grounds for us to help offset those costs,” Lowe said.

The district, he said, will also check with legal counsel to see if its possible to seek recovery from previous work for the fences. The high school baseball and softball teams, meanwhile, will look to use the fields this spring.

Meanwhile, the board also approved a proposal from Boak and Sons Inc. for replacing the roof of the athletic complex, which will cost $54,000.

The work includes removing all curb flashings, metal coping, gutter, downspouts, and abandoned curb; installing half-inch insulation over the current roof system; and installing new EPDM flashings, roof curbs, roof drains, heat flues and plumbing vent penetrations. The new roof also will include a manufacturer’s 20-year no dollar limit warranty to cover material and labor.

In addition, the board approved a roof maintenance plan, also handled by Boak and Sons, to include two inspections per year at a cost of $6,820.
