Salineville approves fire contract, land swap

Morning Journal/Deanne Johnson Connor J. Bailey (left) was sworn in as the newest Salineville part-time police officer by Mayor Linda Adams with Police Chief Matt Devlin also present on Monday.

LISBON — Village council on Monday approved next year’s fire contract and voted to complete a real estate transfer with Creekside Springs LLC.

The annual fire contract with the Salineville Volunteer Fire Department will be for the same amount as last year, $20,000, which will be paid in two installments.

The fire department will also have additional parking space thanks to the Creekside Springs deal, which provides some land near the fire station to the village along with $10,000. The village will be transferring other nearby property to the bottling company.

Village Solicitor Andy Beech said Creekside has already approved the deal and signed the paperwork. After suspending the rules to allow for the matter to be voted on Monday, the village was also able to sign the contract.

Council also voted Monday to hire a new part-time officer, Connor J. Bailey. Police Chief Matt Devlin said he has spoken to others who worked with Bailey previously at the Brady Lake police department, which was absorbed by the township. Devlin said everyone said good things about him and while Bailey is young, he is also eager to work.

Bailey was sworn in following the meeting, along with four council members re-elected during the November election and a newly appointed member of the Board of Public Affairs, Garett Bowling.

In other matters:

— Council authorized Devlin to make repairs to a Chevy Impala cruiser from 2008, which had the steering stop working. Devlin also has another cruiser out of town getting maintenance done and recently had to buy a battery for the village’s third cruiser when it was the last cruiser operating at the time. Devlin was also approved to order the Ohio Basic Code for 2018, which will cost $800.

— Council canceled the first meetings of 2018, which are regularly scheduled on the first and third Monday nights of the month. The first Monday would be Jan. 1 and the second Monday would be Jan. 15, which is Martin Luther King Day. Instead, council will hold a special meeting at 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 28 to finish the year-end bills and will move the reorganizational meeting and first council meeting of 2018 to 6 p.m., Tuesday Jan. 16.
